About The BioSphere
Building Science Through
CollaborationÂ
1. Student-Led Research
The BioSphere is centered around student-led research projects. Guided by faculty advisors from across the Claremont Colleges, members collaborate on projects in areas such as environmental remediation, drug discovery, biomaterials, synthetic biology, public health, and computational biology. Through hands-on experimentation and collaboration, students build practical research skills and gain experience working as part of a team.
2. Science Communication
We believe science should be accessible, creative, and rooted in community. Alongside our research, The BioSphere hosts workshops, information sessions, and outreach events, while creating educational resources like zines and other science communication projects. We are especially committed to highlighting underrepresented voices in STEM and making science engaging and approachable for broader audiences.
3. Interdisciplinary Study
The BioSphere encourages collaboration between science and other fields, including art, the humanities, and design. Through events like science journaling and scrapbooking nights, film discussions, and creative workshops, students can explore science from new perspectives and connect with others across disciplines. By bringing different ways of thinking together, we hope to spark creativity and inspire new approaches to scientific challenges
4. Our Community
Our members come from a wide range of majors, backgrounds, and experience levels across the Claremont Colleges. No prior research experience is required—we welcome any student who is curious, motivated, and eager to learn. We especially encourage students outside of STEM, or those who may not plan to pursue a career in the sciences, to join and bring their unique perspectives to the community.
